WAPPINGERS FALLS — The Crusaders opened the 2018 varsity baseball season on Tuesday afternoon, April 11, when they hosted the Warwick Valley Wildcats at Dutchess Stadium.
Monroe-Woodbury opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Nick Rivera’s triple scored Daveas Espinal and Tyler Guadagno.
Tyler Metcalf then drove in Rivera with a single to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead.
The Wildcats struck back in the top of the third, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded double.
The Crusaders bounced right back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame with Rivera and Metcalf both picking up RBI-singles.
The Wildcats picked up a run in the top of the fifth but the Crusaders added two insurance runs when Brett Rende drove in a pair in the bottom of the sixth with a single.
The Wildcats added one more run with two outs in the seventh but it was not enough to catch the Crusaders.
Steven Campione started the game and picked up the win. He went five innings and worked out of a bases-load, no-out jam in the second inning.
Dylan Beers pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
The Crusaders are scheduled to play next on Thursday at home against the Valley Central Vikings.
