NEWBURGH — On Monday afternoon, Jan. 14, the Crusaders hosted the North Rockland Red Raiders at the Ice Time Sports Complex in Newburgh.

Monroe-Woodbury entered the game with a 6-2-1 record on the season. The Raiders defeated the Crusaders earlier in the season when the teams met at the Bear Mountain Ice Rink.

On Monday, the Crusaders got on to the board first when Ryan Melican took a pass from Daniel McKeon and put the puck into the far side of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Raiders tied the score half way through the first period on a goal by Richie Spatta.

In the second period the Raiders got off to a fast start and took the lead on a power play goal by Aidan Grange.

Five minutes later the Crusaders answered when Christopher Cromwell took a quick pass John Paul Luckman in his own zone, split the defense and scored to tie the game at 2.

The Raiders answered right back with a goal by Anthony Morina to retake the lead 3-2.

In the final two minutes of the period the Crusaders rallied. First Ryan Melican scored his second goal of the game off a scramble in front of the Raiders' net. Then Christopher Cromwell scored 52 seconds later with beautiful shot from behind the goal line to put the Crusaders up 4-3.

But the Raiders just wouldn’t stop and Sean Finnerty tied the game again with five seconds left in the period with a shot from the corner.

The third period opened with the game tied at four goals apiece.

Unfortunately for the Crusaders, the Raiders saved their best for last. They took control of the period as Sean Finnerty scored two more times for the hat trick and Darren Hillard added one to give the Raiders a 7-4 victory.

The Crusaders loss brings their record to 6-3-1 on the season.

Their next game will be at Ice Time when they take on Lakeland High School on Friday night, Jan. 18, at 7:15 p.m.
